A five-week academic immersion in South Korea that expanded my horizons. Taking courses in the respective fields of science and the arts sparked fresh ideas and brought a new, interdisciplinary depth to my work.
AEROBIOLOGY:
STUDY OF LIFE IN THE AIR
A three-credit course where I learnt about different microorganisms present in the air, their mechanisms for movement and how they may spread various diseases in the living beings present around them, as well as their impact on the surrounding environment. The class featured introductory experiments as well as lab visits.
KOREAN ART AND TERRACOTTA SCULPTURE
A two-credit course where I learnt about the traditional Korean art of manipulating terracotta clay to form figures, and learning the process from creation to moulding to firing.
EXCURSIONS AND
FIELD TRIPS
As part of the summer program, I went on several field trips, gaining insights into the Korean lifestyle, culture, food and history.
Studying in Korea for five weeks opened up new areas for thought and ideation in my academic journey, by taking up the two courses: one in the artistic side and the other scientific.
It also allowed me to be immersed in Korean culture through local engagement, traditions and interactions with the university community. It also allowed me to interact with other cultures as I interacted with a largely diverse group of people.
All in all, attending this program helped me develop adaptability, cross-cultural awareness and appreciation for global perspectives, which have positively shaped both my academic and personal journey.
